In the Night

Observable from the window of this cottage is a moon stained the red of a white pebble inside a glass of red wine. About this celestial body and across the entirety of a sky blushed crimson, iron booms. A great pealing of bells. A multitude of distant church bells, all ringing and clamouring. An ominous, discordant clanging that falls from where the intense scarlet light issues. But raising unshaded eyes to glimpse whatever is responsible for irradiating and deafening the night is too painful.

Below the window of this cottage, shadows harden treacle-black. Tarmac, paving stones, houses, gardens, border walls, hedgerows and vehicles are dyed merlot. Autumnal russets shimmer the trees and hedgerows.

Elsewhere in the blooded canopy, on the other side of the red night sky, where the sun would rise to burn by day in the east, there hangs a sense, more than the sight, of new, vast dimensions and the monumental weight of another object oppressing the atmosphere. A shape defined by a blocking-out of the stars. An uneven silhouette so high above. Gigantic, black, inert, occulted by blood-light.
